Teen Artists, Writers and Performers Sought For Twenty-Third Session of
The California State Summer School for the Arts (InnerSpark)

The California State Summer School for the Arts (InnerSpark) is seeking the most talented high school-aged visual, literary, media and performing artists in California. The teenagers who are selected will be designated California Arts Scholars, and will attend one of the country’s premier summer arts institutes on the campus of the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia from July 11 through August 7, 2009.

Posters have been distributed to local high schools, libraries and arts councils. Application forms, instructions and program information can be obtained from the web at www.innerspark.us. The application deadline is February 28, 2007.

For the 520 students accepted each year, InnerSpark represents a unique opportunity to spend four weeks studying and working with professional artists, writers and performers of national stature in the fields of Animation, Film/Video, Creative Writing, Dance, Music, Theater, and Visual Arts. The program provides an educational link to institutions of higher learning, major performing and fine arts organizations, and the film, television and recording industries for students considering careers in the arts. The talented teenagers who successfully complete the program will receive three units of California State University course credit.

Innerspark is also able to help some of its students with college aid through the distribution of Herb Alpert Scholarships for Emerging Young Artists, committing $1.2 million in funds for 18 students each year. In 2009, one outstanding student in each category will be awarded $40,000.

Alumni of the program include actor and Golden Glove recipient James Franco, best known for his roles in Spiderman, Pineapple Express, and Milk; Emmy Award-winning animator Craig McCracken; dancer Sharon Grimsley Teague, principle soloist for the Houston Ballet, and award winning fashion designer Sophie Buhai, to name just a few.

HEARTS OBISPO 3 – Submission Deadline 1/9

Artists take note! This is a great event in which to participate. More than 200 items were sold last year, and the 50/50 split benefits us all. No entry fee makes it easy to submit your art. Small works seem to sell especially well. How small is small? Artists don’t like to be constrained by numbers — let’s just say “smaller than a bread box”, or no bigger than 2' on any side. Please submit no more than 3 works of art. Artwork for HO3 must be delivered to ARTS Obispo’s office from January 5^th-9^th between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Exhibiting artists must be members of ARTS Obispo.

Hot molten beeswax, pigments, and tree resin make up your pallet as you create luminous texture with an infinite number of techniques! Whether you are a painter or work in photography, college, or sculpture, you will love to add the unique Encaustic magic to your work!

Heidi will focus on imparting lots and lots of encaustic technique as well as sharing her approach to the art of encaustic painting. This workshop is limited to 4 students for plenty of individualized attention & work space. All students will work with a personal hot plate so they don't have to share pigment pallets. Heidi will encourage students to learn & experiment with a vast variety of encaustic techniques, creating sample boards which they will take home for future reference.

Students will walk away with all the knowledge needed to embark on their encaustic journey! This workshop also includes 1 hour of post workshop phone support as students begin working independently in their own studios at home.

Students may bring optional materials such as carving implements, wooden supports, photography, paintings and college materials. Joebella Coffee in Templeton is planning an Open Studios Artists’ Exhibition of North County artists during the weeks of September 29-October 19, 2008. This opportunity is for all artists exhibiting in Santa Margarita, Atascadero, Templeton & Paso Robles.

The cost to participate in this exhibition is $10-$20 with the final fee determined by how many artists sign up for this show. The entry fees will be used to defray the cost of the exhibition ad that will run in the Open Studios catalog.

CREATIVES WANTED!
The Holonic Art Movement is looking for you! We're in the middle of planning
an event on September 27, 2008 at CorkStop Studios. We have a few projects planned and need more participants. Here's a list:

1. At least 12 artists to create 5x5" pieces of art (photography, prints, drawings, paintings, watercolor, collage... you name it) with a given theme in mind. They have to be on heavier paper and will be matted & framed together.

2. One more local (SLO County) artist to paint a 18x18" panel (theme: vessel, color: predominantly blue), panel will be supplied by us (there are nine panels altogether)

3. Artists to create 2.5x3.5" cards (like Artist Trading Cards, no rules - as long as the final product is this size and more or less flat) or tags (size to be determined). Themes will be announced.

4. Poets to submit poems to go along with the artist cards (see 3).

5. Book artists to combine the artist cards (see 3.) and poems (see 4.) into a beautiful book (or two)

6. Four local artists to paint 12"x12" panels (theme: black & white), panels will be supplied by us.

7. Local creative people to assemble a sculpture from found materials. We'll supply the first piece. The sculpture goes around from person to person. Everybody adds a piece or two.

The deadline for all artwork (except the books) is August 15th. No exceptions, no excuses. If your work isn't here, we can't use it! Pieces will need to get assembled and/or framed, so this will give us enough time. Book artists will need time to create the book before the event, so if you don't think you can finish your project by August 15th, let us know! We will sign you up anyway, but save your piece for the next round. We're also open to your ideas about how you would like to interact and collaborate with other artists!

Wardrobe Revamp Classes Are Back!

This summer ARTS Obispo will sponsor a series of 5 classes for creative MINDS interested in rethinking, recycling, and recreating clothing, accessories and jewelry. The focus is on reclaiming used garments. Simple sewing skills will be used to reinvent your clothing. Learn stenciling, stamping, painting, and stitching techniques to alter the look of fabrics. T-shirts, skirts, and jeans, become a canvas for creative expression.

Summer series of oil painting classes (with Laurel Sherrie)

Laurel has been giving private classes for several years, and announces the Summer Series of Oil Painting Classes, promising a relaxed atmosphere, nurturing to artists and the creative process. Limited to 10 students, for close attention and guidance. Young adults, adults and seniors welcome. Differing from a large class, each student gets personalized attention and works at their own level of skill. Lessons are 3-hours long once a week, for a four-week series in Arroyo Grande. Plein Air Classes will be in areas around the South County.

City of SLO Seeks Proposals for $88,000 Public Work of Art – walk-thru held 5/30

The City of San Luis Obispo Art in Public Places Program is seeking proposals to incorporate art into street improvements at Buena Vista Avenue and Garfield Street at Monterey Street in San Luis Obispo. The site is near the Apple Farm Inn. A total of $88,000 is available to the artist, or artists commissioned for this piece.

A non-mandatory, pre-proposal walk-thru will be held at the site so that artists may become familiar with the layout, design, and function of the location. The walk-thru is an opportunity to ask questions regarding the City’s Request for Proposals (RFP). Participants are asked to meet in front of the Apple Farm Inn, 2015 Monterey Street in San Luis Obispo at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 30 for the walk-thru.

Proposal packages may be obtained for free on the City of San Luis Obispo’s website, www.slocity.org under Bids & Proposals, by emailing your request to sbates@slocity.org or by faxing your request to

Bay Area Artist Squeak Carnwath at Cuesta College

There will be a panel interview with Squeak Carnwath, an internationally exhibited Bay Area artist, on Friday, February 8 at 5 PM in Cuesta College Art Dept. Room 7120, followed by an art gallery reception for her exhibition, Squeak Carnwath: New Paintings & Prints in the Cuesta College Art Gallery.

This exhibit will feature paintings and prints from Carnwath’s newest body of work. The paintings are large scale with rich surfaces and layered images and meanings. The majority of Carnwath’s work of the last 30 years, and this exhibit is no exception, finds the artist chronicling her life, both personally and as she contacts the world around her. Most often the artist will use images and words on the same surface, with both holding equal importance. As an artist, activist and teacher Carnwath has had an influence that extends far beyond the Bay Area, which she has called home for more than thirty years. This will be her first exhibit on the Central Coast.

Job Duties:

Under the direction of the Executive Director and members of the Board of Directors, the Program Director is responsible for overseeing ARTS Obispo’s programs. The Program Director drives committee agendas and deadlines, will attend monthly meetings and report back to the Executive Director on the activities of program committees. In addition, the Program Director is responsible for marketing ARTS Obispo’s programs by writing press releases, attending community events and developing new avenues of public relations.

ARTS Obispo’s Program Director must have a college undergraduate degree and good writing and organizational skills. There is much face to face and telephone contact with the public, thus candidates need to have excellent verbal communication skills. This position requires computer literacy in Microsoft Word and Excel Programs and requires the ability to move objects up to 30 pounds and to climb ladders. Some knowledge of website development is highly desired and candidates with an established history of commitment to the arts are preferred.

Specific duties include:

1. Create annual program development plan with assistance of Executive Director.

2. Determine program budgets and fundraising goals with assistance of Executive Director.

3. Drive agendas for and attend program committee meetings, including:

• Art After Dark
• Art in Public Places
• Open Studios Art Tour
• SLO Art Gallery Association
• SLOCAATS

4. Assist with ARTS Space Obispo events by helping to install and de-install exhibitions, and coordinate event receptions.

7. Assist Executive Director in planning Ruth Fash Memorial Lecture Series.

Yosemite Renaissance XXIII

Open Studios Art Tour Celebrates Success

The 9th Annual Open Studios Art Tour kicked off its two weekends with a digital exhibition at ARTS Space Obispo on October 5th during Art After Dark. The event was a sensation, with music provided by Café Musique, a beautiful mural depicting the tour by George Asdel, a silent auction of a stunning necklace by Elaine Apsit, a raffle of an original piece by Steven deLuque and projected images from the over 280 participants on the tour. Artists had a chance to visit and see each others’ work while the public had the opportunity to preview the work they would see on the tour.

Two glorious October weekends were spent exploring the wonderfully eclectic spaces where participating artists work and exhibit. While seasoned tour-goers undoubtedly recognized the names of veteran tour artists, many artists this year were on the tour for the first time. This gave visitors a chance to experience a variety of totally new venues in their quest to find the perfect piece for their collections or just check out the fine examples of art being done in San Luis Obispo County.

This year for the first time, the Open Studios Art Tour catalogs sold out. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and are working to make sure this doesn’t happen again. We encourage you to plan ahead for next year’s tour – catalogs will be on sale in August, so check back around that time.

California Coastal Art & Poetry Contest!

The California Coastal Commission invites California students in kindergarten through 12th grade to submit artwork or poetry with a California coastal or marine theme to the annual Coastal Art & Poetry Contest. Up to eight winners will be selected to win $100 gift certificates to an art supply or book store, and each winner's sponsoring teacher will receive a $40 gift certificate for educational supplies. Students may have their work featured on Commission web pages and materials. Entries must be postmarked by January 31, 2008 to be eligible for this year's contest. For the first time, the Torrance Art Museum has opened its door to all artists to submit entries for a juried exhibition in our 3,000 square foot Main Gallery. All-In will be juried by Lorraine Molina, Director of BANK, a contemporary art gallery in downtown Los Angeles. BANK has established itself with an innovative program consisting of video, new media, photography, works on paper, sculpture and installation. Bank recognizes both emerging and established artists making a significant contribution to contemporary art. Its exhibitions have gained critical acclaim from publications such as the Los Angeles Times, Artweek, LA Weekly, Art on Paper, Flash Art, ArtUS, and Tema Celeste among others.

Selection Process
The juror will select the artworks to be shown in the exhibition from the images submitted. The juror has the sole responsibility for the selection of the artworks with no exceptions.

Eligibility
Open to all artists in all media (painting, photography, drawing, mixed media, sculpture, ceramics, and DVD/video), with the exception of jewelry, as we do not have security cases to display these items.

EXHIBITION RECEPTION
Saturday, November 17 from 7 to 10 pm. Award presentation: 8 pm

Los Osos artists participating in the Open Studios Art Tour are invited to meet Friday evening, October 19, at 5:00 and tour each other's studios. Rosey and Barbara Rosenthal will start everyone off with a bowl of hearty soup at ART Is For Everyone (1254 2^nd Street, LO)! Then car pool to the studios of those who choose to participate, finishing at the Denker’s for dessert.

HeARTS Obispo, Round II!

CALL TO ARTISTS!

Once again, February will bring a sweet event to ARTS Space Obispo in the form of heart art, valentines made by local artists and sold to benefit ARTS Obispo's many programs. We are looking for artists to participate in HeARTS Obispo 2 to make valentines and/or small works of art that one might buy as a gift for someone special. These valentine offerings could include certificates for musical or theatrical performances, as well as small sculptures, two-dimensional wall pieces, or elaborate cards.

Artwork for HeARTS Obispo 2 must be delivered to ARTS Obispo's office in the SLO Creamery from January 7th through January 11th between 10 AM and 4 PM. The show and sale will be on display in ARTS Space Obispo from January 21st through February 14th, 2008, with a reception and silent auction held during Art After Dark, 6-9 PM on Friday, February 1st. Proceeds from sales will be split 50/50 with participating artists.
